Flying Lotus ‘Layer 3′ – A Red Bull Music Academy Film from Red Bull Music Academy on Vimeo. Our new mini-documentary peeks behind the scenes of Flying Lotus’s new live audiovisual extravaganza, 'Layer 3' – which the Academy was proud to assist with developing in support of the 'Until The Quiet Comes' tour. Made with the help of visual artists Strangeloop and Timeboy, the trio have devised a method of transporting FlyLo into outer dimensions using two transparent scrims and interactive front and rear projectors, conjuring nothing short of the acid-fried Space Odyssey "Stargate" scene. Lapalux 1. Quartz Stuart Howard aka Lapalux returns with his second EP for Brainfeeder, a further, deeper journey into fractured emotion, tape experiments and mutating states of consciousness. “Quartz” is built around a stumbling music box refrain and filtered vocals. “Jaw Jackin’” is perhaps more propulsive but with no drop-off in surface interference. “Forgetting and Learning Again” features vocals from the wonderful Kerry Leatham, showing that Howard, for all the cutting edge sonics, can also fashion a great song. “Strangling You With the Cord” hits harder, a post-Dilla swing to the drum programming and dubbed out vocal samples. The EP is rounded out by “Close Call”, which twists a strange kind of cosmic soul jazz out of its chopped, squashed and stretched elements. There are few electronic producers out there who are more concerned with the minutiae of surface and texture than Lapalux, and still fewer who understand so well the deep effects that these textures can have upon the listener’s mood. In Lapalux’s productions nothing is left to chance. He makes swooningly beautiful and disorientating music that never sits still for more than a moment. The new album, ‘Until the Quiet Comes’ is now available on Collectors Edition 180g Vinyl, Double Vinyl, CD & Download. Out now on Warp Records. Flying Lotus 1. All In Composed, according to FlyLo, as ”a collage of mystical states, dreams, sleep and lullabies”, Until the Quiet Comes has the distinct feel of this nocturnal trip. From the twitching descent into a subconscious state and the out-of-focus time-ether of the journey that follows, the sound is an unhinged, yet elegant evolution of the melodic and rhythmic interplay that is woven into the DNA of Flying Lotus’ aural personae. The album, featuring guests Erykah Badu, Laura Darlington, Niki Randa, Thundercat & Thom Yorke, was released on October 2nd. Wednesday, October 10 @ Villain – 50 North 3rd Street, Brooklyn BRAINFEEDER SESSION NYC The free-form artist collective and record label headed up by Red Bull Music Academy graduate Flying Lotus, makes a return to NYC with a sub-rattling night celebrating the release of The Gaslamp Killer’s debut album, Breakthrough. Label affiliates such as Dorian Concept and Martyn add a layer of post-everything electronics to the mix. Shut your eyes, open your mind and feel the psychedelic roadshow. |
