Come peruse Collections 01, a menagerie of songs from Teebs on the Brainfeeder label. Like a cluster of exotic birds, anthology of short stories or secret case of sparkling gemstones, Collections 01 further explores the world expressed in Teebs’ previous album Ardour from several new perspectives.

While drawing from the universe of Ardour, Collections 01 is more varied with more samples, each song containing specific elements that give it a unique character. Featuring tracks with harpist Rebekah Raff and Brainfeeder cohort Austin Peralta, Collections 01 offers a range of sentiment, always elegantly displayed. From hypnotic, dust-covered beats and languid daydreams to cascading shuffles and bright bursts of color, this beautiful collection is a further glimpse into the world behind the mind’s eye of Teebs, painter of sound.

“With this record I’m trying to imagine a side project or group of mine that just so happened to make the same exact music as I’m making now. These records are neither EPs or full albums. Just mini collections of ideas…I hope to release them randomly through my life as if they were paintings in a drawn out series. My last album, ‘Great Lengths,’ was very personal. A lot of the music and the themes behind it were taken out of my daily life: my sorrows and my melancholy. For this album, I chose things that are further away from me: the Ghost People theme. There are references to DJing in general. Not the jet-set DJ life, but the old Paradise Garage DJ life, where people want to share and play the music they really love, regardless of if it’s trendy. Nothing fancy or flashy. Just back to the roots.

Its only natural that Martyn has risen above the cliches and pitfalls of the vacuous DJ world. Over his 15 years DJing, 6 years producing, and 4 years A&R’ing his 3024 imprint, the Holland-born/Washington DC-based artist has forged his own path every step of the way. His multi-leveled career has kept balance with a focus on art, and his every sacrifice is preserved in an endless dedication to music. As a continual record buyer and beat seeker, Martyn is a beacon of hope through leagues of passion-less DJs and producers, the “ghost people”: plastic, hollow shells that focus only on the in-the-now grooves or keeping in line with trends.

Martyn’s inspiration stems from the old school mentality of connecting the dots, much like how Ron Hardy would tweak a soul track into a house groove, or Goldie sent processed breakbeats far into the future. Throughout his uncategorisable sound, Martyn gives nods to the electronic music that came before him: bringing back the energy of early rave, the deep builds of old jungle, the immersive and impulsive feel of an early Francois K DJ set. A veritable ambassador for scenes across the board, and across oceans, Martyn has a rare ability to bring sounds together, and unite the right people all the while.

One artist he’s united with time and time again is Brainfeeder leader Flying Lotus. A close friend within whom he’s always found creative alliance, the two decided to join forces on Martyn’s sophomore album this September. With Ghost People, Martyn pulls Brainfeeder out of LA and straight into the fluorescent bounce of West London’s 2-step, massaging the darker edge of Croydon’s dub roots, and D&B’s otherworldly and sci-fi sonics, while simultaneously moving through the grit of Detroit’s mechanic grooves, and into the freewheeling vibe of Berghain. Yet, all the while, he maintains Brainfeeder’s spirit of wild experimentalism and – as the title of his “We Are You In The Future” suggests – sense of futurism at the forefront, with each of the album’s unpredictable tracks.

”I want to be known as someone that always surprises. I think some people have started to accept that. That’s my favorite position to be in.”

In more ways than one, Ghost People stands as a tour diary from Martyn’s globe-spanning schedule over the last two years. While the intensely detailed and layered precision of his sound stays the same, the album soars from the depths of Great Lengths insularity, and heads for the dancefloor, giving hints of the sounds and memories he’s picked up along the way. Ghost People walks a tightrope between joyful liberation and deep speculation, as heard in the spaciousness and atmosphere of “Bauplan,” or the sublime wanderings of “I Saw You At Tule Lake,” in contrast to the duality of “Popgun” (which nods back and looks forward simultaneously) or the warehouse-suited “Horror Vacui.”

”Ghost People is also about being on the road for a long time, and seeing how you cope with situations. I try to zen my way through it, and just stay focused on my music.”

To bring the album to life, Martyn is teaming up with his 3024 partner, visual artist and muralist (“the artist formally known as street artist”), Erosie. The two will be planning a series of special launch parties in various parts of the world.

Martyn explains: “I did create parts of the album with my live set in mind. The live set is very much a performance of the album for me. That’s where the artwork comes in, too: the sleeve, and then having Erosie recreate it live in a venue. It’s a full live manifestation of the album.”

If indeed “you blows who you is,” as Louis Armstrong once famously said, then Stephen Bruner’s bass is a mainline to the soul of a man whose DNA was transcribed from the stars onto staff paper. His Flying Lotus-produced debut, The Golden Age of Apocalypse, offers both stone-cold skill and uncanny astrality, picking up where the pair left off on 2010′s Cosmogramma and further distilling the jazz current running through that landmark Lotus release. A longtime contributor to others’ albums, Bruner, aka Thundercat, is accompanied by an impressive cast ranging from Erykah Badu to members of Sa-Ra and J*DaVeY, to pianist Austin Peralta and his own Grammy-winning brother, drummer Ronald Bruner, Jr. Still, the end result is unmistakably a Thundercat record — a lush and magical document combining classic jazz fusion, futurist electronic strains and timeless musical seeking.

A native of South Los Angeles, Bruner found his instrument at the age of 4. That made him a late-bloomer in the house of Ronald, Sr., who drummed with the Temptations among others. His first bass was a black Harmony, and he practiced to the Ninja Turtles soundtrack until pops played him Jaco Pastorius. School was a blur of lessons, sessions and waking up for zero periods. At 15, he scored a hit in Germany as part of the short-lived boy band No Curfew. At 16, he toured Japan with soul man Leon Ware and joined thrash legends Suicidal Tendencies (he’s still their bassist). More road and studio time followed, with everyone from Stanley Clarke to Snoop Dogg to Eric Benet. Eventually the name Thundercat stuck, a reference to the cartoon he’s loved since childhood and an extension of Bruner’s wide-eyed, vibrant, often superhuman approach to his craft. As one writer put it, he’s “a mutant jazz cat,” nuff said.

Spanning a cosmic stew of players, locations and times, The Golden Age of Apocalypse was years in the making even though Bruner had never planned on releasing his own music. But Lotus spurred him on, and each song became a journey. There’s the ebullient “Daylight,” a soft whirl of bluesy piano, New Age synth, snapping beats and warm bass. There’s “Walkin’,” an upbeat soul strutter powered by Bruner’s digitally distorted plucks. There are raw, improvised numbers like “Jamboree” and virtuosic bass pileups like “Fleer Ultra.” One of the album’s most stunning moments arrives with a spacious cover of George Duke’s “For Love I Come,” a taut beauty spangled with crystalline harp and keys. Bringing this string of divinely unexpected moments to a moody and cinematic close is “Return to the Journey.” There, Bruner sings, “Time will pass us by,” but listeners needn’t worry. Inside of this space, time really isn’t a thing.

Martyn has a startling ability to keep the media world standing on its toes. Just when he was pegged a bass artist, he knocked heads flat with a flutter of four-on-the-floor releases for the likes of Aus Music, Ostgut Ton and All City. Likewise, every chance to see Martyn DJ brings a new dimension of surprise: all rules and preconceptions are left equally as shattered.

The decidedly independent artist has always done things his way and his way only, even choosing to release his debut album – Great Lengths – on his own label (3024) in 2009. But instead of staying in the expected zip code for his next body of work, he opted to tread a different avenue: he took Flying Lotus up on the offer to join his family. Martyn’s sophomore album, Ghost People, will be released on Brainfeeder this fall.

Masks / Viper is the first single from Ghost People, a taste into what’s to come with Martyn’s new – and, naturally, unexpected – sonic direction. The A-side, “Masks”, builds a spacey, sci-fi terrain, with a sharp 4/4 groove and metallic, hypnotic chromatics. Melodies sit on top of each other, winding upwards to become the ultimate soundtrack for walking through the hallway between Berghain and Panoramabar, exploring from one room to the other.

Dark and fringed with a rough edge, “Viper”, as Martyn puts it, is “a beatless exercise in the sound that made Metalheadz.” “Viper (London Arches Edit)” brings the feel of a gloomy dark tunnel: imagine cycling past the doors of Cable in London Bridge on a shadowy Monday night.

Fields is not such much an album as it is an evolving A/V experience, an environment, that leans more in the direction of a Steve Reich inspired minimalist piece than the beat-heavy territory of earlier Strangeloop releases.

Inspired directly by an experience while in an altered state of consciousness, Strangeloop heard a composition which he tried to create directly after, the result being a fluctuating subliminal epic in three sprawling and unique movements : 1. “Plants Inside”, 2. “Ghostlines” and 3, “Becoming Fields”. The movements correspond to three movements within a psychedelic trip; of initial birth and constellation, through to death / dissolution, and then finally a transcendental union of both.

Strangeloop is known mostly for his live-visual executions accompanying an unending list of artists: Amon Tobin, Flying Lotus, 12th Planet, and most of the Brainfeeder roster to name a few. The producer and video maker explores new lush and organic visual worlds in his latest release, available both for purchase with the EP, and as a part of an interactive A/V experience online.

The release features additional synth work by Strangeloop’s long time friend, collaborator, and fellow Brainfeeder, Austin Peralta, as well as sparse vocal revelations by Singapore based vocalist Vanessa Fernandez and Portland based vocalist Anna Gariby. It was mastered by Daddy Kev, and features visual collaborations with artists Gavin Gamboa, Ben Olsen, and Brandon Tay.

Blazing back onto the radar with one of the most anticipated and long-awaited albums yet on Brainfeeder is SAMIYAM. Sam Baker’s Album is 40 minutes of deviant listening pleasure, a series of woozy, off-center hip hop instrumentals drawing heavily on Baker’s love of electronic funk but never obligated to it.

Intensely detailed and carrying considerable emotional weight, this is not Rap Beats Vol. 2, but rather an album of fully realized tracks that stand on their own, knee-deep in the groove and bent to the side. Sludgy, chunky beats mesh with organic sounds and fractured stops and starts, all coming together like the pieces of a demented dream.

SAMIYAM moved to Los Angeles from Ann Arbor, Michigan in 2006; in his short time on the West Coast he has become one of the city’s most progressive and recognized producers, a man who has helped spearhead the revival of interest in instrumental hip hop music. His album Rap Beats Vol. 1 was the first release on the Brainfeeder label, and SAMIYAM’s raw hip hop sound with a psychedelic edge and off-kilter beats could be called quintessential Brainfeeder style.

Jennifer Lee aka TOKiMONSTA prefers to work late – or early, depending on how you look at it. Most of her music is made between two and seven in the morning, because at that time of night “my mind works in strange and mysterious ways.” Hence the title of this EP, a series of warm but decidedly woozy pieces of music, the soundtrack to the oddest, most beautiful dreams you’ve ever had.

From the bouncing bass-beds of “Bright Shadows,” the Cocteau’s-meet-LA-Beat of “Darkest Dim” (like “Little Pleasures,” featuring the exquisite vocals of Gavin Turek), on into “Moving Forward” (which sounds like the music R2D2 makeslove to), the driving, relentless beat of “Day Job,” this is an EP suffused with both warmth and creativity.

Peel back a layer of smog from the LA sky and fold yourself into the blanket of haze. The golden half-light catches glimmers that pass by most eyes. Manifestations is a funky and diverse sonic collection from Mono/poly, a talented member of the Brainfeeder roster. A well-paced work, the EP’s momentum grows and then contorts into other dimensions, balancing powerful rhythms and a beautiful depth for a holistically moving experience.

Manifestations has seven tracks, each with a very different tone. From the warm opening haze of the title tune to the complete crashing madness of “Punch The Troll In The Neck,” Mono/poly has cultivated a choice sonic garden to explore. The shifty beats of “Glow” are straight off the streets of Los Angeles, while the stakeout sounds of “Toe Jam” descend into the groove with fresh urgency. “Forest Dark” has a bipolar personality altogether, with a funky industrial grind that flips over headfirst into the ripples of a peaceful pond.

A strong debut on the Brainfeeder label for Mono/poly, Manifestations is a release whose many waxy layers are peeled away one at a time to reveal a glowing core of true talent and innovative sound design.

“Some rappers be killing my mood. I’ll listen to shit on the radio or hear a ‘hot’ new rap album from some dude, and it’s like my spirit curls up. The beats may be dope, and the style, but I’m not entirely into the motives or messages of these guys. It’s defiantly not ‘hate’ against any new or old artist that have gained such a high commercial popularity, nor am I directing my energy to compete with such musical acts, I just build my music from a different place spiritually.

Growing up, I was going back and forth from the north side of Chicago, going to art school, to the south side where gang members are young entrepreneurs and positive or healthy choices are met with anger and a deep unending struggle. Yet, being around certain people and having examples such as my father (a jazz composer, pianist, and vegan for over 10 years), exposed me to more holistic paths in life which helped open my mind, body, and spirit to discovering ways of expressing myself.

Rappayamatantra EP is a bridge between the Dxnce EP, and my future LP release entitled Raw Money Raps. Rappayamatantra, as a theme, came to me while I was reading “Be Here Now”, a book written By Ram Dass. It totally reaffirmed for me that everyone possesses a divine energy, and through certain practices and principles, anyone can realize and fulfill their own spiritual and creative potential. As a rapper, one challenge that can disrupt that true being, can be to remain relevant and even trendy so that one can be popular and make money.

With this record I didn’t want to think too much about commercial appeal or trends, rather the personal struggle to remain honest and balanced for anyone, be them a rapper, a teacher, or a friend. This record is intended to be a direct communication for the humans out there, if you dress fly, or not. Even if you like to play computer games or meditate in the mornings. Be empowered and enlightened through your own light the body possesses, and bump this EP in the whip! Please Cop! Hotep.”

Place in My Heart (feat. RYAT) is the debut single off of Taylor McFerrin’s full length LP ‘Early Riser’, due out on Brainfeeder in 2011. The song represents a style that many haven’t previously heard from the Brooklyn based producer. Leaning heavily on layered guitars and dense swirling effects, the music is dark and soulful, with a tone somewhere between beauty and pain.

A fitting match for the subject matter of RYAT’s lyrics, which are a letter to a loved one contemplating suicide. RYAT is a Philadelphia based Singer/Producer, whose album ‘Avant Gold’ sparked Taylor’s desire to collaborate on the track, which he felt was a perfect match for her distinct vocals. If ‘Place in My Heart’ represents one thing listeners can expect from the ‘Early Riser’ LP as a whole, it’s that McFerrin is more than willing to expand his sound in all directions.

The tune was recently selected as an ‘All Year Winner’ on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Radio show on BBC 1 and remains on heavy rotation. The music video, directed by Simon Benjamin, stars Taylor’s brother Jevon McFerrin and actress Stephanie De Latour, and is a perfect visualization of the story and emotion of the single.

The next album forthcoming from Brainfeeder might, at first sight, appear to be something of a change in direction for the label but nothing could be further from the truth.

Austin Peralta is a jazz musician. Not in the sense that he or people close to him bandy around the word “jazz” (or even worse, “jazzy”) in relation to his music. No, in the sense of years of practice and dedication to a particular artform. In the sense of having played with, amongst many others, the likes of Chick Corea, Hank Jones and Ron Carter. In the sense of having serious chops. Of playing the piano and composing like a true veteran. And in the sense of having done all that by the time he’s twenty one. And that’s before you even get into his work as a session player for everyone from Erykah Badu to Shafiq Husayn, or the time he sat in with legendary LA big band, Horace Tapscott’s Pan Afrikan People’s Arkestra.

But, as Flying Lotus explains, “this is a step in direction of where I want Brainfeeder to go. True musicianship as well as some interesting electronics.” Peralta, another LA native and son of legendary Z-Boy skater and, latterly, documentary film-maker Stacy Peralta, in many ways fits clearly into what Brainfeeder has always been about, a combination of questing futurism and an understanding of where you’re coming from. So while Peralta works alongside serious jazz musicians like Zane Musa (alto sax), Ben Wendel (tenor and soprano), Hamilton Price (bass) and Zach Harmon (drums), he also relies on longtime friend and associate Strangeloop for electronic manipulation throughout the set and ends the album with a scintillating collaboration with The Cinematic Orchestra and singer Heidi Vogel.

“People would always tell me about this genius jazz pianist,” Flying Lotus recalls. “‘Hes like 17 or 18 and already sounds like Mccoy Tyner!’ I had to go and see what was up, so Strangeloop introduced me, and I got to hear this amazing record.” And once he’d heard it there was only one outcome. It is, after all, the Brainfeeder way. “We had to put it out.”

I know, I know, I know. You don’t have to say it. He’s there, too, in my head, that
little yellow fuck. Put him to bed, put him away, lock him in a box and throw the
box into the Grand Canyon. Don’t mention the muppet.

Five years after the 2000 debut album of Mr Oizo, “Analog Worms Attack,”
featuring a tune featured in an advert featuring a lemon-coloured creature­
who drives a car and bobs his cute ol’ head Mr Oizo returned with his second
album, “Moustache (Half A Scissor)”. Quentin Dupieux, who allegedly got his first
recording deal after his dad sold Laurent Garnier a car, had spent the intervening
period throwing out all his analog gear and learning to chop, programme and
explode beats and music on computers. The result was an album of such
aggressively funny and brilliant programming that most of the millions of people
who had got into the yellow thing ran around screaming and bumping into each
other until they cried and fell over.

It was heard, though, by aficionados including a young man in LA by the name
of Steve Ellison. Steve is now better known as Flying Lotus and his label,
Brainfeeder is re-releasing “Moustache” in an edition of 1000 vinyl copies. It’s a
thing of amazing, demented beauty which Ellison felt deserved to be heard again
and reassessed. “The original label that put it out thought it was unlistenable at
the time, they didn’t quite believe in it, but it was way ahead of its time. It’s an
honour for Brainfeeder to re-release this record, it’s one of the most inspiring
electronic records ever made.”

As for Dupieux himself, a successful film-maker as well as a musician, what does
he make of it? “I think 76% of this record is very inspired,” he explains. “The rest
is terrible and not really interesting.” He pauses and thinks this through “But hey,
76% is a good score.”

The ranks of LA’s beat scene have swelled exponentially in the past year, but even amongst the sea of FlyLo knockoffs, a small cadre of truly innovative producers continues to stand out. One of those producers is Matthewdavid, an accomplished beatmaker and sound collage artist who also happens to run the inventive Leaving Records label. Both David and the Leaving imprint are known for their love of unusual releases, whether it be limited-run cassettes with custom-made artwork or hand-painted floppy disks. So when we invited Matthewdavid to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series, it comes as little surprise that he elected to do something special. His All the Love I Feel for You mix is quite unlike any other podcast we’ve ever hosted, as David has combined abstract gems with field recordings, discarded cassettes, distorted vintage R&B instrumentals, and lots and lots of tape delay. When a mix includes song descriptions along the lines of “Mexican tape from the ’80s I ended up throwing away,” it’s clearly not the average DJ offering.

The much-anticipated debut album from Bay Area beat manipulator Eskmo is set to drop on October 19, but before it sees the light of day, this Lorn (pictured above) remix of his song “Come Back” has shaken loose. The Milwaukee-based Brainfeeder member has dropped Eskmo’s vocals way into the background, and fully cranked the “menace” knob on his mixing console. The beats don’t so much bang as they do lurch, as though the song is some kind of boogeyman that crawled out of the netherworld and wants to eat your ass up. Yes, it’s a bit scary, but fun scary, like watching a good horror flick. Grab some popcorn and turn it up.
