Los Angeles-based producer the Gaslamp Killer has a new EP, Death Gate, that’s set to drop October 12 on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint. The EP features a collaboration with Gonjasufi that you can check out below. The birdman of Brainfeeder: Teebs premieres first single off ‘Ardour’

Flying Lotus has described Teebs’ music as sounding “the way ‘Avatar’ looks.” And those familiar with the 23-year-old visual artist and musician’s canvasses would be prone to concur.
Like the Teebs-painted album cover at right, his music is a yarn ball of intense colors and peculiar crevices. His last EP was titled “Tropics,” and it boasted the spectral beauty of his artwork, with beats that bloomed with pastel color. His sound is a Gordian knot, impossible to unravel but bright as agate.

It’s a balance of the baroque with the abstract, a collision between tangled futuristic projections and everyday objects. One of his best mixes was called “2 a.m. Wine,” and it captured Teebs’ ability to project an Ambien-addled aesthetic — a gauzy, gorgeous haze ideal for the witching hours.

His first single for his Brainfeeder debut LP, “Ardour,” expands on these ideas, and illustrates why it’s one of the most anticipated records within the Los Angeles beat community. Since moving from New York several years ago, the producer-artist born Mtendere Mandowa has been one of the city’s brightest prospects, a member of the My Hollow Drum collective, a frequent Dublab guest and a Low End Theory staple. Additionally, BBC Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs included one of his tracks on her “Wild Angels” compilation.

“Ardour” is slated to be released Oct. 19th. It figures to be worth marking your calendar in advance.

As postmodernist space odysseys go, Flying Lotus’ Cosmogramma has confidently weaved itself into the lineage of Sun Ra and his Astro Infinity Arkestra’s Strange Strings, Nicolas Roeg’s The Man Who Fell To Earth and Afrika Bambaata’s Planet Rock…

While Cosmogramma is a monolithic convergence of 20th and 21st century musical forms, high in concept and wide in musical collaboration, Pattern+Grid World pulls the focus back to Steven Ellison and his machines. These machines are speaking (and possibly looking as well, judging by the EP’s cover) from the go, as “Clay” introduces itself in a fog of synth and vocoder and gives way to one of the many surprises here, the schizophrenic ping-ponging electro of “Kill Your Co-Workers”. Drenched in alternating melodies, it’s a synthetic counterpart to the grand string and harp arrangements of Cosmogramma, making acclaimed illustrator Theo Ellsworth’s subtly psychedelic cover image of vision-through-noise all the more intimate.

When Flying Lotus records hit their stride, all buttons labeled “pause” and “stop” disappear, and this one is no different. “Pie Face” is led by icy keys that could almost be mistaken for classic grime, before the stoned plastic marching band steps in. “Time Vampires” amazingly lands somewhere between vintage DJ Premier and Lee Hazelwood, while the stripped back bass and drum explorations of “Jurassic Notion/M Theory” are as shamanic and ceremonial as anything you’re likely to hear come out of California. If “Camera Day” brings to mind a certain crew of dungeon-dwelling ATLiens, it won’t come as much of a surprise that Killer Mike found its syrupy bounce recently inspiring.

Much of the messages surrounding Cosmogramma’s release as well as reportage on the world’s ever-emerging beat scenes has painted a picture of Flying Lotus as a patriarchal figure blazing the trail for scores of young artists with new conceptual notions of what can be done with a drum machine and a dream. While this notion is certainly not inaccurate, it sometimes overshadows the fact that FlyLo is also an incredibly singular entity. However, as “Physics For Everyone!” stutters to a close, if you listen closely you might just make out the sound of another kid in his room somewhere in the world, anxiously tapping out his first beat.

LORN – “None An Island”

Lorn aka Marcos Ortega returns with a new EP from his critically acclaimed debut album, “Nothing Else.”

One of the standout tracks from a breakthrough record, “None An Island” combines Lorn’s trademark overt emotionalism, brutality and bleakness into something transcendentally beautiful. Brainfeeder labelmate Samiyam then takes “Brainwaves” and converts it into a lowriding, limping journey into paranoia and fear. Lorn ups the ante yet again by returning with two new original tracks, “Never Enough,” which uses a distorted, rasping, alien voice to syncopate its rhythms, and “Until There Is No End,” which shows that Ortega’s grasp of melody is never compromised by the sheer heaviness of his tracks.

A fantastic accompaniment to his album and a further delving into his sound, “None An Island” strongly suggests we’ll be hearing much more from Lorn for a long time to come…

We’re very happy to launch our new podcast, and we could think of no one better to do it than California beatmaker, painter, rising star and Svetlana recording artist Teebs.

Teebs has been building a considerable reputation in his own quiet way.

A member of the LA-based Brainfeeder collective, he was first featured on Mary Anne Hobbs’ “Wild Angels” compilation, before releasing the collaborative Tropics EP with Jackhigh on Svetlana in April 2010.

He’s built a reputation as much as a painter as a musician, producing the artwork for The Tropics EP as well as a series of limited handpainted covers. He’s also produced commissioned artwork for a range of other artists and exhibits regularly in and around Los Angeles.

His music is distinctive in being both abstract and emotional at the same time, with an almost jazz-like ambiguity to its mood.

As of July 2010 he is currently touring the USA with Shlohmo and will release his debut album shortly on Brainfeeder’s own label.

Young Teebs is more than just another producer in Southern California’s über-fertile beat scene. The Chino Hills resident—who swears that he’s moving back to LA proper very soon—is not only busy putting the finishing touches on a debut album slated for release on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label later this year, he’s also an accomplished skater, artist, and painter. Basically, he’s one of those dudes who’s seemingly good at just about everything he does. Like many of his musical brethren, he claims to have been originally inspired by trips to vaunted weekly club night Low End Theory, although we’re guessing that the fact that he also has spent time living with FlyLo and Samiyam certainly hasn’t stifled his development as an artist. Now he’s fresh off the release of his collaborative Tropics EP with UK producer Jackhigh, and about to embark on a summer tour with like-minded young buck Shlohmo, so we were lucky to pin Teebs down long enough to put together a mix for the XLR8R podcast. Stuffed with hazy, blunted beats, the mix nicely captures the spirit of the LA sound and also happens to feature a grip of unreleased and exclusive tunes.

“My answer to that,” explains Lorn, having quoted the words of Satan to his lieutenant Beelzebub, “is ‘Nothing Else.’” Which is one way to explain that this 23 year old “from the middle of nowhere in Illinois” is not keen on compromise.

The second artist album from Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint is a deep, deep, dark and uncompromising suite of music. The only Brainfeeder artist to neither come from or ever to have lived in LA, Lorn has already developed an international following for his music. Now, with “Nothing Else” the musician and artist reveals his debut full length. Epic, melancholic and brutal, it’s a record which the listener has to be prepared to immerse themselves in. The rewards make it worth the effort. From the fairground dramatics of “None An Island” through the soundtrack sweep and military momentum of “Army of Fear,” the discombobulated atmospherics of “Bretagne,” the sheer brute force of the bass on “Automaton,” the acid-fried detailing on “Voids” 1 and 2, the woozy migraine-simulacra of “Tomorrow,” the off-centre melodic catchiness of “Glass & Silver” and “Cherry Moon,” the deconstructed electro of “Greatest Silence” and on to the utterly uncompromsing conclusion of “What’s The Use,” where an underwater hip hop break smashes up against Hammond and the ghost of a human voice, this is a record which feels like its been hewn from stone. Albeit electronic stone.

A remarkable, transcendent achievement, no one who knows anything about him is going to claim that Lorn’s life has been easy and nor is his music. Instead it’s raw, emtional, angry, beautiful and real.

TOKiMONSTA herself sits down for an in-depth discussion on rabbit-monsters, her LA (and Korean) roots, and her must-hear engaging style of music that merges the conventional with the experimental, while still defying labels. She is a participant in this year’s Red Bull London Music Academy, and part of our series of reports from inside the program.

“This singular undertaking is entirely typical of Daedelus’s fertile, butterfly imagination – a mini-album conceived as an imaginary soundtrack to the Chinese Boxer Rebellion of 1899. Thankfully, LA’s Alfred Darlington approaches this self-imposed task from an oblique angle. Hoary old kung-fu movie samples are conspicuously by their absence, and it’s difficult to discern any overtly Chinese touches at all. Instead, there are eight characteristically mellifluous compositions that combine warm, melodic lyricism with simple but subtle arrangements, skipping blithely across stylistic boundaries. Daedelus neatly combines vintage textures, skittering beats and plaintive oboe for his scene-setting opener, and then goes on to introduce elegant flamenco picking (”Tidal Waves Uprising”), airy bossa nova (”Order Of The Golden Dawn”) and even reedy stylophones (”Succumbing”). Some of the tracks are little more than sketches, but there’s enough imagination on display across these 25 minutes to put many larger scale works to shame.”

While mostly instrumental, some of the tracks feature seductive vocals, like the samba-esque “Order Of The Golden Dawn” with Darlington’s wife Laura. Or “Succumbing To”, a track that might as well be taken from one of Björk’s earlier albums. As with most concept albums, the result is very consistent and that’s what makes Righteous Fists the best work from Daedelus I’ve come across. Running for only 26 minutes, it leaves you with the wish for more – like a pleasant nap on a summer day.”

In pairing with L.A. producer Gaslamp Killer, Gonjasufi has found a powerful outlet for his otherworldly strain of singing. Together they’ve created A Sufi and a Killer, one of the most fascinating slabs of hallucinogenic head-nod music to arise from Southern California’s post-hip-hop vanguard. Unlike the digital bleeps and squelches of SoCal contemporaries FlyLo and Nosaj Thing, however, Gaslamp Killer and Gonjasufi draw from their hip-hop background to create an LP that could as easily fit on the Stones Throw roster as well as it does IDM-centric Warp. The beats knock, but for every moment of b-boy-friendly atmosphere, there’s another moment– or a simultaneous one– that makes like 21st century acid rock.

Gonjasufi’s vocals are both haunting and haunted, coolly assertive yet frequently fixated on mortal matters, and they bleed vividly through Gaslamp’s corroded analog wall of zero-fi psychedelic noise. The results are stark: Brooding, bad-trip laments (“Kobwebz”), a doo-wop number punctuated by spacey twang (“Duet”), a warping of the blues (“Ageing”). Even the more straightforward stuff has a grimy quality to it, particularly the heavy soul of “Change”, the bar-jazz tension of “Advice”, and the woozy “Kowboys & Indians” with its Eastern vocals looped against a rust-covered revision of club rap beats circa 2003.

“Hey, so Victorian-dressing electronic guy Daedelus has a new mini-album coming out on Flying Lotus’s Brainfeeder label.

Titled Righteous Fists of Harmony, it marks the first release on the new global Brainfeeder – which basically means they now have an international distribution deal – and preludes Daedelus’s forthcoming album for Ninja Tune, Bespoke.

Says FlyLo, “Daedelus was one of the first people I met in the LA scene, he hardly knew me or my sound at all and invited me into his home and shared stories and music with me when I was trying to find my way out here. He’s been such a great and inspiring friend ever since. I feel like with this album we’re close to coming full circle.”

In this release for Flying Lotus’ up-and-coming label Brainfeeder,
Daedelus presents a soundtrack-of-sorts to the Boxer Rebellion. What,
you ask, could make such ancient history an inspiration for modern
electronics? Well, Daedelus has found a strange relevance to our
modern malady in these epic events of long ago…

After seventy years of China’s opium-related subjugation by Queen
Victoria and her allies, a force of resistance fighters — termed
“Boxers” by the British — rose to the challenge in 1898. Calling
themselves “The Righteous Fists of Harmony,” this secret society of
martial artists felt they held magical powers: they believed
themselves bulletproof, able to fly, and capable of raising the dead
(who would then fight alongside them). And so began the brief Boxer
Rebellion; three years later 100,000 Boxers had fallen, their magic
helpless against the cutting-edge machinery of war. The British
prevailed only to face ultimate defeat, as their empire rapidly
declined.

Daedelus endeavors to compose a requiem for the end — of beliefs, of
lives, and of an era. This elegy for a bygone battle sheds light on
our own contemporary conundrum: will our faith in modernity be our
downfall? Are we blinded by this age of wonders, doomed to be
destroyed by our ingenious inventions? Although Daedelus’ music has
always juxtaposed organic and electronic elements, they war as never
before on “Righteous Fists of Harmony,” a portrait of a tumultuous era
that came crashing to a close.

The Gaslamp Killer’s Hectic, Eclectic Decksterity

A sunny September Sunday in Volunteer Park: Parents and their offspring commingle with the hardcore electronic-music heads at Decibel Festival’s climactic day in 2009. Onstage, a skinny, bespectacled, bushy-Jewfro’d DJ is getting hectic on the decks. Sporadically he bellows into the mic, mid-mix, big-upping and identifying the music he’s spinning, peppering his informative asides with liberal usages of “motherfucker” and other terms of endearment for the throngs of revelers who are scarfing up this maniac’s selections and exhortations. Delicate, youthful ears are being violated with vicious profanities and sounds that are both sacred and filthy, old and new, obscure and familiar, eclectic and psychedelic. After his set, which was the best of the fest for sheer showmanship and content, the crowd mobs him for GLK mix CDs and stickers—and to finish his whiskey and maybe to give him drugs. He leaves the stage CD-less and sticker-less. (Possession of illicit substances could not be confirmed.) A mother fucking phenomenon is launched.

The Gaslamp Killer (aka 27-year-old L.A.-based William Bensussen; henceforth GLK) used to include the intensifier “Motherfucking” in his stage name; now he mostly relegates it to conversation, stage banter, and Twitter posts, for which he exclusively uses CAPS LOCK. Even if he’s not billed as such anymore, the attitude behind the handle remains in full force.

GLK began DJing in San Diego’s Gaslamp district at age 17, playing to military personnel, surfer dudes, assorted meatheads, and the ladies who love ‘em—none of whom could fathom the value of what he was laying on their thick domes. In this hostile environment, GLK developed a combative spirit, if you’ll allow an understatement. For some reason, the area’s promoters kept booking GLK, even as he proudly, defiantly cleared dance floors with his “instrumental psych dirty beats.”

A self-proclaimed “neurotic Scorpio Jew” of Turkish, Lebanese, and Mexican descent, GLK initially wanted to participate in San Diego’s punk-rock scene, but he couldn’t find anyone on his wavelength and his bass-playing stank.

“Then I started listening to rap shit, and then I went to a rave and saw one DJ controlling the whole crowd like a one-man band,” GLK writes via e-mail while stuck in “worstfuxkintrafficjamever” on his way to a gig in Boston; such is his business now that he had to madly peck out his responses to The Stranger in these cramped, pressurized circumstances. “That’s when I knew what I wanted to do. So I started buyin’ records and practicing on my homie’s turntables until I saved up enough to buy my own and practiced every fucking day. The rest is history.”

A significant part of that history happens at L.A.’s Low End Theory, a weekly confab of audio research and development held at the Airliner, where GLK is an integral figure. There he swaps knowledge and inspiration before large crowds with DJ Nobody, Daddy Kev, D-Styles, Flying Lotus, Ras G, Daedelus, and other future-freaking beat scientists who have made SoCal one of the world’s most fertile post-hiphop/post-dubstep hotbeds. For the last three years, GLK has been able to focus on his DJing and production skills, and the woodshedding and frequent gigging have paid huge dividends, to the point where he’s now poised to upstage Prefuse 73 on their upcoming tour.

GLK’s DJ sets stand out from others’ due to their strange juxtapositions and rapid collision of styles and the wide range of genres he covers, which are bolstered by turntablist tricks and off-the-cuff commentary. Rampant diversity and seemingly illogical transitions reign, but rather than sounding clunky and dilettantish, GLK’s shows dazzle through his incredible reflexes and knack for making ostensibly absurd segues coalesce into the most galvanizing music-history lessons—and up-to-the-minute new-schooling—imaginable. After you peep a GLK performance, witnessing a jock perfectly beat-match in one mode all night, no matter how great the track selection, will lose some of its luster. His antics and witty, vulgar pronouncements fuel audiences to outrageous levels of excitement—and it all comes off neither as pandering nor cheesy, even as he serves as his own hype man. “I always try to connect with my crowd,” GLK humbly notes.

Shockingly, he can’t really pinpoint the source of his greatness. “My evolution is what it is and it continues to evolve… I don’t know where it comes from or where it will go next.”

What can be ascertained after a few minutes of any GLK gig, though, is a superhuman energy level that’s matched by extensive knowledge of (deep breath) old and new hiphop, psych rock from many nations, funk, soul, jazz, IDM, jungle, dubstep, and whatever hot-shit underground-club mutations are springing up tomorrow. The man is omni voracious in his consumption and absorption of music, which explains why preeminent UK crate-digger Andy Votel booked GLK at his B-Music club night and enlisted him to mix All Killer, a CD compendium blending tracks from his Finders Keepers label’s first 20 releases.

“It has been a blessing to run with Andy Votel and the B-music/Finders Keepers/Twisted Nerve crew,” GLK says. “The music they are rereleasing and playing on a regular basis blows my mind and many minds, [and will continue to do so] for many years to come. Big up to my man Cherrystones for putting me on to so much dope music, as well. Doing [All Killer] was a blast, and I hope they ask me to mix the next 20 releases in the near future.”

In interviews and onstage, GLK comes off as something of a crusader and educator for great, esoteric music, but he also attends to the more practical function of “rocking a party,” with bonus articulate body language. He describes his style as “educational with a touch of rock ‘n’ roll energy and eclectic exorcisms. My rules, no industry standards apply.”

No empty boast, that. But lest you think GLK’s simply a cocky, egocentric mofo (which he is, to an extent, but justifiably so), he bestows credit to the aforementioned Low End Theory night as a turbo booster to his aesthetics and artistic growth.

“The Low End Theory is a movement,” he states. “It’s a place where artists can truly express their full artistic selves on and off stage. Low End Theory has more support than almost any other musical/artistic movement of its kind and of its time. It has changed me and my friends’ styles a number of times over and influenced the world. I would not be the artist or the man I am without the Low End Theory.”

What you will experience at a Gaslamp Killer show is a disc jockey who works strictly in CAPS LOCK mode, his expletives flying over the dopest tracks in multiple genres, slammed together with savage grace, as the most luxuriant white-boy ‘fro since the MC5’s Rob Tyner furiously bobs. In ways that you’ve never heard before, this motherfucker will kick out the jams.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone
as we’re approaching this new year, I felt it was time to let go of some things that have been gathering dust. Some old things, and some new things, I tried to pick out tracks that I know yall haven’t heard yet so there should be surprises around every turn.
