So waxes Jeremiah Jae on the subject of “Money”, the first single from his epic Brainfeeder full-length Raw Money Raps. Over a soft focus guitar loop and spaced out snaps, Jae flips from sun-bleached croon to a rapid beat-riding flow and then a chopped & screwed slur that practically oozes codeine.

These three vocal personae represent the songs three perspectives, says Jae, “1) The rich man expressing his disconnection with material life, 2) The poor man’s emotional struggle attaining and losing money, and 3) the dreamer who’s objective over everything is making money by any means necessary.”

It wasn’t that long ago that Lapalux (a.k.a. Stuart Howard) was just another young UK producer perking up people’s ears with a hard-to-define mix of low-end-heavy, but undeniably experimental, sounds. Even when we tabbed him as a Bubblin’ Up artist last summer, largely on the strength on his then-fresh Many Faces Out of Focus EP, the full extent of his potential was only beginning to reveal itself. Then came this year’s When You’re Gone EP, released on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint, which displayed a whole new level of sophistication and a real penchant for sonic whimsy. With this kind of skill at his disposal, we were curious to see exactly what Lapalux could do if tasked with putting together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Although he doesn’t actually DJ that often—he prefers to perform live—Lapalux quickly proves that’s he’s more than capable of assembling a compelling mix. His selections come from both sides of the Atlantic and could individually be tagged with an assortment of inadequate genre names—bass music, beat music, witch house, screw, experimental—but ultimately, it’s clear that they all bear some relationship to hip-hop while only rarely sounding anything like traditional rap music. He’s clearly taking notes from a rich palette of influences, and though this podcast still doesn’t allow us to put Lapalux in a neat little box, it does provide an interesting window into the sounds that make him tick.

With his sophomore album Ghost People appearing on 2011‘s end of the year charts for the likes of Mixmag (#6), Clash Magazine (#9), DJ Magazine (#9), Data Transmission (Album of the Year), Martyn returns to Brainfeeder to release a follow-up 12” this March.

The 12” leads with “Hello Darkness”, previously unreleased and exclusive to the release, Martyn shuffles through a rhythmic bassline and feeling of, indeed, darkness from the very first beat. In typical Martyn fashion, the track skips its way through genre conventions, landing in a flux between 2-step, driving techno and old rave (the latter specifically heard in his ethereal and scaling upper melodies). “Hello Darkness” could lend itself to the rawest, grittiest warehouse, yet simultaneously breeds a subtle feeling of elation and release, and keeps the listener guessing with a variety of quirky sound collages.

It also features a remix of “Bauplan”, Night Slugs bosses L-Vis 1990 and Bok Bok bringing the most sinister corners of London into their remix, with a heavy grime lean and a pervading feeling of tension. Erratic samples (sounds of a tweeting bird one moment, the cocking of a gun the next) appear in-between a snap beat, metallic stabs and an apocalyptic build-up of percussion and synths. Pulsing in and out of a highly volatile atmosphere, almost as if the track is alive and breathing, this “Bauplan” almost feels like an unrelated beast until Martyn’s melody lines start to unfold halfway through the track.

To finish there is an exclusive remix of “We Are You In The Future”, a favourite from the Ghost People LP amongst critics and DJs across the board. Techno’s notorious man in the red mask – Redshape – steps up to create a deep and dark Detroit interpretation of Martyn’s freewheeling, sci-fi-enhanced joyride. Laced with ominous vocal samples (“It may be an accidental side effect of the drug”), the future takes on a slightly more dystopian feel with Redshape’s melancholic strings, unpredictable percussion builds and a lingering, creeping reinterpretation of the track’s original melodies. A definitive nod to the epic work of Derrick May and Carl Craig, with a hint of Kenny Larkin’s intricate builds.

Stuart Howard aka Lapalux has come up with something special for his first release with Cali’s finest, Brainfeeder. Having made his name with his cassette-only “Many Faces Out Of Focus” and acclaimed bootlegs and remixes he returns with a seven track EP of such poise and beauty, one listen is enough to know you’re onto something special.

Lapalux bathes your brain in lush textures, surprising and explosive atmospheres set in unencountered, unearthly spaces, all somehow perfectly set against catchy rolling choruses informed by pop and commercial R&B. On the “When You’re Gone” EP he channels and refines his sound and shapes it into hazy, woozy emotion. Whether working with a singer like Py (on “Moments”), or deconstructing found samples and his own voice, Howard stretches, bends and warps sound to make soul – not plastic posturing but real emotion made of synthetic sound.

Anamnesia is an archetypal sci-fi myth conceived of by resident Brainfeeder audio-visualist [dr.] Strangeloop. In the future, a utopian civilization is driven mad by a mysterious imbalance in the fabric of space and time. As reality comes apart at the seams, Anam, mysteriously unaffected by his civilization’s schizophrenic break, journeys through vast unmapped dimensions looking for answers to aid his dying world.

My last album, ‘Great Lengths,’ was very personal. A lot of the music and the themes behind it were taken out of my daily life: my sorrows and my melancholy. For this album, I chose things that are further away from me: the Ghost People theme. There are references to DJing in general. Not the jet-set DJ life, but the old Paradise Garage DJ life, where people want to share and play the music they really love, regardless of if it’s trendy. Nothing fancy or flashy. Just back to the roots.

Its only natural that Martyn has risen above the cliches and pitfalls of the vacuous DJ world. Over his 15 years DJing, 6 years producing, and 4 years A&R’ing his 3024 imprint, the Holland-born/Washington DC-based artist has forged his own path every step of the way. His multi-leveled career has kept balance with a focus on art, and his every sacrifice is preserved in an endless dedication to music. As a continual record buyer and beat seeker, Martyn is a beacon of hope through leagues of passion-less DJs and producers, the “ghost people”: plastic, hollow shells that focus only on the in-the-now grooves or keeping in line with trends.

Martyn’s inspiration stems from the old school mentality of connecting the dots, much like how Ron Hardy would tweak a soul track into a house groove, or Goldie sent processed breakbeats far into the future. Throughout his uncategorisable sound, Martyn gives nods to the electronic music that came before him: bringing back the energy of early rave, the deep builds of old jungle, the immersive and impulsive feel of an early Francois K DJ set. A veritable ambassador for scenes across the board, and across oceans, Martyn has a rare ability to bring sounds together, and unite the right people all the while.

One artist he’s united with time and time again is Brainfeeder leader Flying Lotus. A close friend within whom he’s always found creative alliance, the two decided to join forces on Martyn’s sophomore album this September. With Ghost People, Martyn pulls Brainfeeder out of LA and straight into the fluorescent bounce of West London’s 2-step, massaging the darker edge of Croydon’s dub roots, and D&B’s otherworldly and sci-fi sonics, while simultaneously moving through the grit of Detroit’s mechanic grooves, and into the freewheeling vibe of Berghain. Yet, all the while, he maintains Brainfeeder’s spirit of wild experimentalism and – as the title of his “We Are You In The Future” suggests – sense of futurism at the forefront, with each of the album’s unpredictable tracks.

”I want to be known as someone that always surprises. I think some people have started to accept that. That’s my favorite position to be in.”

In more ways than one, Ghost People stands as a tour diary from Martyn’s globe-spanning schedule over the last two years. While the intensely detailed and layered precision of his sound stays the same, the album soars from the depths of Great Lengths insularity, and heads for the dancefloor, giving hints of the sounds and memories he’s picked up along the way. Ghost People walks a tightrope between joyful liberation and deep speculation, as heard in the spaciousness and atmosphere of “Bauplan,” or the sublime wanderings of “I Saw You At Tule Lake,” in contrast to the duality of “Popgun” (which nods back and looks forward simultaneously) or the warehouse-suited “Horror Vacui.”

”Ghost People is also about being on the road for a long time, and seeing how you cope with situations. I try to zen my way through it, and just stay focused on my music.”

To bring the album to life, Martyn is teaming up with his 3024 partner, visual artist and muralist (“the artist formally known as street artist”), Erosie. The two will be planning a series of special launch parties in various parts of the world.

Martyn explains: “I did create parts of the album with my live set in mind. The live set is very much a performance of the album for me. That’s where the artwork comes in, too: the sleeve, and then having Erosie recreate it live in a venue. It’s a full live manifestation of the album.”

If indeed “you blows who you is,” as Louis Armstrong once famously said, then Stephen Bruner’s bass is a mainline to the soul of a man whose DNA was transcribed from the stars onto staff paper. His Flying Lotus-produced debut, The Golden Age of Apocalypse, offers both stone-cold skill and uncanny astrality, picking up where the pair left off on 2010′s Cosmogramma and further distilling the jazz current running through that landmark Lotus release. A longtime contributor to others’ albums, Bruner, aka Thundercat, is accompanied by an impressive cast ranging from Erykah Badu to members of Sa-Ra and J*DaVeY, to pianist Austin Peralta and his own Grammy-winning brother, drummer Ronald Bruner, Jr. Still, the end result is unmistakably a Thundercat record — a lush and magical document combining classic jazz fusion, futurist electronic strains and timeless musical seeking.

A native of South Los Angeles, Bruner found his instrument at the age of 4. That made him a late-bloomer in the house of Ronald, Sr., who drummed with the Temptations among others. His first bass was a black Harmony, and he practiced to the Ninja Turtles soundtrack until pops played him Jaco Pastorius. School was a blur of lessons, sessions and waking up for zero periods. At 15, he scored a hit in Germany as part of the short-lived boy band No Curfew. At 16, he toured Japan with soul man Leon Ware and joined thrash legends Suicidal Tendencies (he’s still their bassist). More road and studio time followed, with everyone from Stanley Clarke to Snoop Dogg to Eric Benet. Eventually the name Thundercat stuck, a reference to the cartoon he’s loved since childhood and an extension of Bruner’s wide-eyed, vibrant, often superhuman approach to his craft. As one writer put it, he’s “a mutant jazz cat,” nuff said.

Spanning a cosmic stew of players, locations and times, The Golden Age of Apocalypse was years in the making even though Bruner had never planned on releasing his own music. But Lotus spurred him on, and each song became a journey. There’s the ebullient “Daylight,” a soft whirl of bluesy piano, New Age synth, snapping beats and warm bass. There’s “Walkin’,” an upbeat soul strutter powered by Bruner’s digitally distorted plucks. There are raw, improvised numbers like “Jamboree” and virtuosic bass pileups like “Fleer Ultra.” One of the album’s most stunning moments arrives with a spacious cover of George Duke’s “For Love I Come,” a taut beauty spangled with crystalline harp and keys. Bringing this string of divinely unexpected moments to a moody and cinematic close is “Return to the Journey.” There, Bruner sings, “Time will pass us by,” but listeners needn’t worry. Inside of this space, time really isn’t a thing.

Lots of people ask me about Thundercat, and how I come to know this guy. Thing is you’ve been hearing him for years and probably didn’t even know it. He’s one of the most talented bass players I’ve ever witnessed and I’ve been blessed to have worked with this guy on ‘Cosmogramma’ and ‘Pattern+Grid World’. Since then Thunder has been like a brother to me and feels like the other half of my brain in the studio. I thought it would be good to get you familiar with the man who’s contributed his unique sound to so many records I love. Here’s some things, a prelude to the LP. Some new, some you might know, some we may never release.

His debut album ‘The Golden Age of Apocalypse’ drops Aug. 30th, which I have had my hand in putting together.

Martyn has a startling ability to keep the media world standing on its toes. Just when he was pegged a bass artist, he knocked heads flat with a flutter of four-on-the-floor releases for the likes of Aus Music, Ostgut Ton and All City. Likewise, every chance to see Martyn DJ brings a new dimension of surprise: all rules and preconceptions are left equally as shattered.

The decidedly independent artist has always done things his way and his way only, even choosing to release his debut album – Great Lengths – on his own label (3024) in 2009. But instead of staying in the expected zip code for his next body of work, he opted to tread a different avenue: he took Flying Lotus up on the offer to join his family. Martyn’s sophomore album, Ghost People, will be released on Brainfeeder this fall.

Masks / Viper is the first single from Ghost People, a taste into what’s to come with Martyn’s new – and, naturally, unexpected – sonic direction. The A-side, “Masks”, builds a spacey, sci-fi terrain, with a sharp 4/4 groove and metallic, hypnotic chromatics. Melodies sit on top of each other, winding upwards to become the ultimate soundtrack for walking through the hallway between Berghain and Panoramabar, exploring from one room to the other.

Dark and fringed with a rough edge, “Viper”, as Martyn puts it, is “a beatless exercise in the sound that made Metalheadz.” “Viper (London Arches Edit)” brings the feel of a gloomy dark tunnel: imagine cycling past the doors of Cable in London Bridge on a shadowy Monday night.

Fields is not such much an album as it is an evolving A/V experience, an environment, that leans more in the direction of a Steve Reich inspired minimalist piece than the beat-heavy territory of earlier Strangeloop releases.

Inspired directly by an experience while in an altered state of consciousness, Strangeloop heard a composition which he tried to create directly after, the result being a fluctuating subliminal epic in three sprawling and unique movements : 1. “Plants Inside”, 2. “Ghostlines” and 3, “Becoming Fields”. The movements correspond to three movements within a psychedelic trip; of initial birth and constellation, through to death / dissolution, and then finally a transcendental union of both.

Strangeloop is known mostly for his live-visual executions accompanying an unending list of artists: Amon Tobin, Flying Lotus, 12th Planet, and most of the Brainfeeder roster to name a few. The producer and video maker explores new lush and organic visual worlds in his latest release, available both for purchase with the EP, and as a part of an interactive A/V experience online.

The release features additional synth work by Strangeloop’s long time friend, collaborator, and fellow Brainfeeder, Austin Peralta, as well as sparse vocal revelations by Singapore based vocalist Vanessa Fernandez and Portland based vocalist Anna Gariby. It was mastered by Daddy Kev, and features visual collaborations with artists Gavin Gamboa, Ben Olsen, and Brandon Tay.

Blazing back onto the radar with one of the most anticipated and long-awaited albums yet on Brainfeeder is SAMIYAM. Sam Baker’s Album is 40 minutes of deviant listening pleasure, a series of woozy, off-center hip hop instrumentals drawing heavily on Baker’s love of electronic funk but never obligated to it.

Intensely detailed and carrying considerable emotional weight, this is not Rap Beats Vol. 2, but rather an album of fully realized tracks that stand on their own, knee-deep in the groove and bent to the side. Sludgy, chunky beats mesh with organic sounds and fractured stops and starts, all coming together like the pieces of a demented dream.

SAMIYAM moved to Los Angeles from Ann Arbor, Michigan in 2006; in his short time on the West Coast he has become one of the city’s most progressive and recognized producers, a man who has helped spearhead the revival of interest in instrumental hip hop music. His album Rap Beats Vol. 1 was the first release on the Brainfeeder label, and SAMIYAM’s raw hip hop sound with a psychedelic edge and off-kilter beats could be called quintessential Brainfeeder style.

Our friend B+ (Mochilla) put together a mix dedicated to his amazing catalog circa 1969-1981.

ThunderCat’s recent cover of For Love I Come inspired me to have a listen again to the amazing music of George Duke. When most of the records on this mix were made it was an extraordinarily creative time in LA. A family of musicians were bringing new rhythms, new instruments, new humor, new international influences to jazz. CannonBall was an important figure and his partner David Axelrod – but the new arrivals Airto Moreira and Flora Plurim were also instrumental and then George Duke from the Bay Area who had collaborated with Frank Zappa.

George Duke has been an inspiration to hiphop for many many years…… Back in 1991 an album came out called Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest. You may know the name for another reason but anyways on a song called The Infamous Date Rape Tribe sampled Steam Drill by Cannonball Adderley featuring George Duke and we were off to the races. Ice Cube sampled Duke for True to the Game from Death Certificate that same year. Since then many more beat heads have been attracted to Mr. Dukes amazing keyboard playing, sense of rhythm and unique lyrical stylings. Dilla has definitely listened as has Madlib, Pete Rock, Kanye, Karriem Riggins and now well ThunderCat.
ThunderCat for all his youth has actually played with George Duke.
Anyways this mix is in tribute to George Duke as it is in celebration of ThunderCat.
I think we are in a similarly creative moment now in LA as existed in the mid seventies and it seems fitting to make the link.
Good musicians will make you listen again and
ThunderCats For Love I Come surely made me do that.

Jennifer Lee aka TOKiMONSTA prefers to work late – or early, depending on how you look at it. Most of her music is made between two and seven in the morning, because at that time of night “my mind works in strange and mysterious ways.” Hence the title of this EP, a series of warm but decidedly woozy pieces of music, the soundtrack to the oddest, most beautiful dreams you’ve ever had.

From the bouncing bass-beds of “Bright Shadows,” the Cocteau’s-meet-LA-Beat of “Darkest Dim” (like “Little Pleasures,” featuring the exquisite vocals of Gavin Turek), on into “Moving Forward” (which sounds like the music R2D2 makeslove to), the driving, relentless beat of “Day Job,” this is an EP suffused with both warmth and creativity.
